'' Don't treat animals as animals treat them as living beings that's what they are.''
Hello everyone so today I am back with another critically endangered species which is on the edge of extinction and the world's rarest marine animal that is Vaquita. The plight of cetaceans - whales, dolphins and porpoises as a whole is exemplified by the rapid decline of vaquita in Mexico, with about 10 individuals remaining.
Vaquita{Phocoena Sinus}
The Vaquita[phocoena sinus], literally "little cow", is a species of porpoise endemic to the northern end of the gulf of California[sea of Cortez, vermilion sea]. Averaging 150cm(for females) or 140cm(for males) in length, it is the smallest of all living cetaceans today, the species is on the brink of extinction. Vaquitas are generalists, foraging on a variety of demersal fish species, crustaceans, an squids though behenic fish such as grunts and croakers make up most of the diet.
Here is a video which will give a glimpse of it.
The steep decline in abundance is primarily due to bycatch in gillnets from the illegal totoaba fishery. Given their proximity to the coast, vaquitas are exposed to habitat alteration and pollution from runoff. This animal is listed as critically endangered on ICUN red list.
So we should protect them and take care of them to prevent them form being extinct....
